The town is located about 30 Kilometers from Nairobi CBD and lies in Kajiado County. The newly build expressway has however made Kitengela sound like a satellite town just near Nairobi.
Up until recently, Kitengela town was rooted in the Maasai culture. The main inhabitants were Maasai pastoralists who herded cattle across the vast area. However, with the rise in urbanization, a huge population of middle-class Kenyans from all parts of the country have come to settle here.
